Technology: RSS Feed Reader for Subscribing to Blogs

You may have heard that Google Reader is "going away" on July 1, 2013. I love Google, but I'm not sure why they are getting rid of their best services over the last year. Since I subscribe to all of the blogs I follow via Google Reader, I had to find an alternative.

I tried two candidates: Feedly and Blog Lovin'. Feedly won. I prefer the overall layout of Feedly over Blog Lovin'. Both will import your Google Reader feeds automatically. You won't loose anything once Google Reader shuts down for good -- everything will be saved in your new account, whichever way you go. Feedly is more customizable as well.

I created different categories for my blogs that I follow to keep them organized. That way, if I only want to view my education blogs, I can easily do so. I also like that I can customize the feed to show a photo preview of the post.

Have you decided on a new feed reader? Which did you choose?

  1. Thanks for the info! I was trying Bloglovin, but I think I will try Feedly... Will let you know which one I chose.

  2. I didn't care too much for feedly - I don't know if it was user error or what but I couldn't figure out how to customize it. And any changes I made on the site never showed up on my phone. I've been making out much better with bloglovin

  3. I'm currently using Bloglovin but I don't love it. Maybe I'll check out Feedly and see which I like better. Wish I could just stick with Google.

  4. Feedly has won me over, but Net Vibes was a close second. Still have an occasional issue subscribing to new feeds in Feedly.

  5. I'm still trying to figure something out. Didn't remember hearing about Bloglovin, so that may be one to try. I'm also at a loss as to why Google would be ditching Reader--I haven't found anything to compare to it. It works well whether I'm on a computer, my Android phone or Kindle Fire. At this point I was thinking I would just fork over the money to try Doggcatcher (I think that's the name of it). The plus side to that is I can also add podcasts there. And the free coinage Amazon recently offered would pay for the app, so it really wouldn't cost me anything.

  6. I picked Feedly too. I was surprised at how many people are recommending Bloglovin. I gave it a go and didn't like it at all. I've customised my feedly so it is exactly like a Google reader experience. I don't like change *G*....
