DIY Project: University of Utah Wall Clock

Today I created one of the coolest things yet -- a University of Utah wall clock!


A few weeks ago, I accidentally knocked down our cheap clock in the living room and it stopped working. The placement of the clock wasn't that brilliant though, so it was just waiting to fall.


While my parents were in town last week we went to the University Bookstore and I found some awesome U of U wall clocks. The only problem being the price -- $39.99! They were vintage looking and were just so very cool. The frugalista that I am was searching the clearance sections and found a sweet 2011 wall calendar on clearance for $2.88. All of the photos in it were the same ones used on the clocks they had (I so wish I took a picture of them so I could show you how similar they are to mine). I decided to make my own clock with my calendar.

Here's the calendar I bought. The pictures are 10.5" x 12" -- there is no such frame for that except on Amazon, but I didn't want to wait a day more to make the clock, so I went to Michaels yesterday and bought a 12" x 12" shadow box type frame. Because of the picture size and the frame size, I had to mount the picture to a piece of 12" x 12" scrapbook paper.

I also got this Making Memories Distressing Kit on clearance, which I used to make the frame look old.

I should have taken pictures of the process, and I intended to, but forgot. I took this picture when I thought I was finished...and then I realized there aren't any numbers on it. Duh!

I used my good ol' Cricut Expression cutter to cut the numbers out in white vinyl. I used the Lyrical Letters cartridge to cut the letters. I know, the 4 is hard to see, but I didn't have any other colors besides white, brown, and black. Oh well.

I took the glass out because the clock pieces wouldn't fit with it in. I purchased the clock kit (the hands/motor) at Michaels.

Chris hasn't seen it yet and I can't wait for him to come home in an hour and see it. He's going to absolutely love it! I posted some photos on Facebook and my Mom is ecstatic over it. She wants one now, too. I'll probably be making on for her, and one for my Dad when I go in for the wedding. If I do, I'll take step-by-step photos to post.
