Have 5 Minutes? Deep Clean Your Sink Faucet

It is truly amazing, the difference that you can make by thoroughly cleaning a sink faucet. Water can easily collect under the faucet handles/knobs and if the water is at all "dirty" then it can make the faucet look gross. Faucets can easily be wiped down each day to keep up appearances, but if you take the faucet knob off and clean underneath, you can make a world of difference.

I use an old toothbrush to clean around the edges of the faucet first with some Shaklee All-Purpose Cleaner. This gets all of the nasty grime and any hair that collects around the faucet.

Next, I take off the knobs with a screwdriver and clean around underneath and inside the knob. It seriously makes the knob all sparkly and clean, making my faucet look like it's maybe 5 years old instead of 15.

Now, with that said...you should see this bathroom sink/counter combo from the 80's...or 70's...who knows. It's so lovely. A marbley looking tan color with GOLD glitter sprinkled here and there. #1 I can't stand glitter. #2 it's probably the thing that bugs me most about my apartment because it's just so hideous. And do you see the lovely caulk job along the backside of the counter...it's SO bad. Haha. I might peel it off this summer and redo it myself. It's just so terrible.

And finally, for the grand finale...rub the faucet with wax paper to keep it shiny a little bit longer than usual. It will resist water spots!

The bathroom is my least favorite place to clean, what about you? Do you have any tips to share for making bathroom cleaning less of a chore?

  2. Thats a great idea. I use fabric softener that smells fantastic so that every time I do laundry I look forward to how the clothes and linens smell when they are finished. This doesn't help when it comes to cleaning the bathroom though...

  5. Ha! I have to clean the exact same faucet! I usually just soak the knobs in hot water and wipe off with the rag around it. Been doing it forever. I hate those knobs and my office has the exact same ones, only I don't have to clean them.

  6. It's one thing I hate about living in old apartments. The yucky grime from so many years of tenants who just don't know how to clean it seems. I should really do this, if I figure out how to remove the knobs... The space between the wall and the faucet is also quite disgusting. The whole bathroom is pretty disgusting actually, can't think too much about it or else I'll get depressed :(

  7. When I have time or the grime is built up, I make a paste with Barkeeper's friend & put it all over the knobs & faucet/sink. Let it sit for a bit then hit it with the toothbrush, rinse well, & shine it up. BF works wonders! The trick is letting it sit so the scrub time is less.

  9. I just posted about bathroom cleaning today too…except I tackled a cabinet.
I should do my faucet too. I'm sure it could use a good cleaning!

  10. I have that same ugly faucet and I can't wait to replace it!

I haven't tried waxed paper, but furniture polish spray works well to keep the chrome shiny and spot free, too.

  12. I have a neat trick to clean chalking that has gotten mildewy/black around your sink (works fantastic around bathtubs). Very lightly dampen area that needs to be cleaned. Press 2-3 layers of toilet paper on area. Spray/mist with generously with bleach. Leave overnight. Take off t. paper and rinse area. Be sure bleach cannot run off and damage anything. Smells like a swimming pool but worth the results! Used this trick in many rentals & really works.
