Have 10 Minutes? Declutter Your Junk Drawer

I don't have a junk drawer. I honestly don't believe in them. But I know a lot of people do have them, so today's quick task is to clean it out.

Here are the steps you can take:
  1. Dump out/clear out the drawer.
  2. Vacuum the drawer, if needed. Wipe it out with all purpose cleaner.
  3. Take the drawer out and spray the track down with WD-40 if it sticks when pulled out.
  4. Categorize what you're going to put back into the drawer. Throw anything that is broken/missing pieces/that you'll never use again.
  5. Organize what will go back into the drawer.

Some ideas for organization for you.

  3. Great suggestions! My kitchen has not one, but three junk drawers that are in desperate need of a makeover. My 8 and 9-year old have a school drawer of supplies---maybe if I dress it up and make it extra girly and fancy, they'll want to keep it more orderly :)

  4. When I was growing up, we had a junk drawer and it was hard to find anything you needed. As an adult, I have never had a junk drawer because I don't want to search for things.

I encourage my clients to let go of the term "junk drawer" and replace it with "utility drawer." The pictures you posted are great examples of utility drawers: things you use, kept in one place, located where you can find them.

You don't need fancy decorations or expensive dividers for a functional utility drawer and you really can set one up in 10 minutes or less. Thanks for the post, Tiffany!

  5. Earlier this month I tackled our "junk" drawer and counter. The stuff in there wasn't junk of course - it was just a catch all space for stuff we use a lot. I posted all about it - you can check it out at

The best part about it is everything has a home. Even today if you go to my house it still looks like this. It's been easy to keep up and because we already had everything on hand it was a free change!

  6. Hi Tiffany! I have just come across your blog today and I LOVE it! Friends and family think I'm a little weird because I get excited about organising (though I am not quite as organised as I'd like), so your blog is great inspiration! :-)
