I often receive comments/emails asking how I edit my photos or how I add my blog name to each photo. I used to use Picnik. I absolutely loved Picnik. I even paid for their premium service. But then Google closed them down. I found a replacement which is slowly getting better and better. It's called Pixlr Express. It doesn't take as long to load/edit the photos as Picnik did.
Here's an example of the process I go through to edit one photo. It takes me about 2-3 minutes to complete per picture.
#1 Open a photo. Pixlr gives you the option to open from your PC, a URL, or webcam.
#2 Under Adjustment, I resize my photos to make them the perfect size for my blog posts. I always set the width to 525 - it doesn't matter if the photo is landscape or portrait. When you change the width, it will automatically change the height for you. Changing the file size makes the pictures load a lot faster on a blog as well. After resizing, there's a button you can click that will automatically zoom your photo back in to the perfect viewing size. Then I use the Auto Fix option to change the color.
#3 I change the color effects next. I always use Sanna, found under Subtle.
#4 Next, I add a border. I use Normal under Rounded Corner.
#5 I add my blog name manually to each photo. I haven't found an easier way to do it yet, but it doesn't really bother me since I'm editing the photos anyways.
#6 After adding the text to the photo, I'm all done. I save the photo and then close it to start editing the next one.
Pixlr also has a full version online that is free to use. It appears to be like Photoshop and has more options for editing. I haven't used the full version yet, so I don't know how it all works or if it's any good. I'd imagine it probably is since their Express version is good.
How do you edit your photos?
A personal blog that covers a variety of topics -- cleaning, organizing, home, family, DIY projects, and much more.

ReplyDeleteI think I'll enjoy using Pixlr! I just tried it but I'm stuck trying to figure out how to change the font size! Any tips?
ReplyDeletePicnik recommends picmonkey.com and aviary.com
ReplyDeleteI tried picmonkey and found it to be pretty decent. They also suggested Google creative kit .... which I looked into but wasn't impressed.
Thanks for sharing this... Now I'm not that sad about Picnik closing up. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous-
ReplyDeleteTo change the font size, you need to click and hold on the circle on the text box (on the right side) and drag bigger or smaller.
Great share! I've been using Picnik and haven't had an opportunity to look into other sites. This was helpful, can't wait to check out Pixlr!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the tutorial. I've got a lot to learn.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the referral, I've been wondering what I would do post Piknic. I'm excited to try pixlr!
ReplyDeleteI just downloaded pixlr express and I have their android app on my phone! I have also been trying to teach myself how to use "the gimp," which is pretty much the open source version of photoshop.
ReplyDeleteLooks great! And thanks for the tutorial!
ReplyDeleteThank You so much for this tutorial!!
ReplyDeleteI'm not very good at figuring this stuff out myself. Having this step by step intro was so very helpful. I love taking pictures and sharing them with friends on Facebook but I also don't like the idea that my photos can be easily used without my permission. I really needed to figure out how to put my name on my pictures and it's so easy here.
You have no idea how happy this made me.
