Cleaning Purses & Accessories

Today I took the time to clean out all of my purses and accessories and throw them in the wash. I didn't realize how many I have. So ridiculous.

The great thing about having purses and accessories made from cotton with removable bases (such as those from Vera Bradley & Thirty-One), is you can wash them - in the washing machine. It's SO nice. I've ruined so many purses in the past from getting stuff on them and not being able to clean them in an easy way.

So once a year I gather all of my purses and accessories and throw them in the wash. I do not dry them in the dryer. I set everything out and let it air dry. Think of all of the nasty bottom-of-the-purse germs I wash away.

How do you clean your purses & accessories? I'd love to know how to clean those that can't go in the wash.

  2. What? I did not know this is possible. I also hand cleaned my vera..and it needs a good cleaning. Do you do the gentle cycle? How do you wash it? Thanks for sharing!!!

  4. heh, usually by the time they're that dirty I've used them for about a year or so and I don't care if I ever see or look at them again so they hit the donate pile. Now, I have a thirty-one purse so maybe I'll just wash the outside skirt, wipe down the inside, and be good to go.

  5. I have a purse obsession too! Most are Vera Bradley. But I did just discover 31 so I might be adding more of those soon!

  7. I spray my unwashable stuff down with a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water. It cleans with a little rubbing and is a natural disinfectant. The smell goes away as soon as it dries so you don't smell like a pickle! Love to clean w vinegar and water!!!

  8. My main purse is from Urban Expressions, a vegan handbag company, and made from vegan "leather". I clean the outside of my purse about once a month, just by going over every part with a disinfecting wipe. Once it dries I go over it with a cleaner/conditioner/protector made for real leather. The inside is polyester I think, so at most I just vacuum out each pocket.

  9. I am just so jealious of all you. I have no collection of purses. I have 3 right now, and I usually use them until they fall apart. So I am so mad right now.... :)
Although 2 of the purses I have I do through in the wash, they are from Walmart. The one I am using now it has the fake leather straps. So no washing this one.

  10. My daily used bag is a Coach purse, which I have dried cleaned about once a year. I know, I know!! But the way I see it, I invested in this bag and I'm going to take care of it. I've had it for over 5 years now.

  11. Well I had also the same problem that you are having of washing and cleaning purses but recently I bought a new purse from Miche Handbags and the purses over there are such that you don't have to wash or clean your purse, just change the outer shell of the purse with other design.

  12. I have a thirty-one wristlet and was just spot cleaning it and the black seemed to fade onto the white. Would it be okay to wash in the washer without the colors fading?
