Project 2: Living Room - Before

Yesterday I told you how I was inspired by Jen at IHeart Organizing to clean my living room. Today I am showing you the before photos.

My living room isn't a huge mess by any means, it just really needs a thorough cleaning. Having a dog is rough on my couch...my microfiber couch. (Never again will I buy microfiber.) And my dog loves to bury himself under blankets, which covers the blankets in dog hair. Eh...if it were up to me, I'd shave him. I can't stand the dog hair everywhere. Fortunately for him, I like him way too much. =]

Don't you love our coffee table (a.k.a. trunk)? You'll never guess what's inside. It's quite ridiculous what I have to use that wonderful storage for. Let's keep it a mystery. Can you guess?

Yes, we have a bike in our living room. Oh, the joys of apartment living. We have no where else to keep the bike. And this is only, oh...let me see...the 4th or 5th bike Chris has owned since we moved to Utah...5.5 years ago. Long story. But the lesson from the first bike or two -- don't leave them outside...someone might like what they see and decide they need A SINGLE WHEEL. Ha!

And the other junk on the ground is from my closet purge.

Ha! Caught in the act. Look at all of those blankets on the couch for Jazz to just snuggle up in. And this purple one he's in here...it's disgusting, but it's his. The gray one on top of the couch is mine, but whenever I use it, he thinks he needs to get underneath it with me. Ugh...spoiled.

Last Friday was my last day of student teaching and I was given this cute plant by a student. It requires bright sunlight...which I do not have in my apartment. I have to make sure I put it in the window every day. We'll see how long I can remember to do this.

And how cute are these colored vases?! I bought them at IKEA eons ago...or like, 7 years ago. Same thing. I've never used them as vases before, just as beautiful decoration in a window. Ah, I love them.

I have to show off this collage I made a few years ago. These are all pictures that I took in my mom's flower garden in Pennsylvania. The pictures turned out absolutely amazing. I haven't been back to PA during the summer in a few years, so I haven't been able to take flower photos in a long time. =[ Perhaps this summer when I go for my wedding.

If there's one thing you need to know about Chris, he's a huge video game/electronics/movie fan. Which is funny because we have all of these video games and consoles, and all he ever plays is the XBOX 360 and like, 3-4 (out of his 15, 20 games?) of the games he has. You can't see, but we also have a Wii which is on top by the TV. It's a mess. The right cabinet has Nintendo games and console accessories. The left cabinet is beginning to overflow with BluRay movies. I want so desperately to put them into DVD books (those CD case things), but Chris won't let me for some reason. Last year I got rid of all of the DVD cases and just kept the cover art and alphabetized the DVDs into the books. It works great and saves space. Some day I'll get those BluRays in the same system...you'll see.

I'd love to eventually move to media boxes for all DVDs, BluRays, and video games, like Jen did at IHeart Organizing. I know Chris would hate this though..."you can't view everything all at once"...that's what he'd say.

And...the bookshelf. Ah, the bookshelf. I have no words for it. One year ago it looked good. But then I began student teaching and ordering books from Scholastic. I ordered every $1 book they had every month from every age level. Who knows what grade I'll teach? And whatever I don't teach, I'll have for my future children. So many good deals...I should have passed up. I don't have the room for all of them...obviously! Ha ha! This bookshelf will be it's own project. I don't have time to deal with it today. I also want to inventory all of my books so I don't buy duplicates.

Jazz's ridiculous toy bin. Look at all of those babies! Spoiled.

This photo makes me laugh. It's ridiculous, too. All of that junk under this tiny table is stuff I've bought this year on clearance for my future classroom. I got one heck of a deal at the beginning of the year at OfficeMax and Staples. So now it's all being stored in this bin. And I keep buying...ugh. I won't anymore now that I see how much crap I have.

One more ridiculous photo...that's the word of the day, isn't it? Look at this candy bowl. It's overflowing with sugar and calories. It's all Chris', I swear. =]

I won't post process photos of my cleaning, but I will post pictures of the specific projects within the living room that I'm tackling when I get to them. So tomorrow you'll just see after photos of the living room all cleaned up.

Some of the projects within the living room are: the coat closet, the teaching supplies (I need to see what I have and reorganize it all to fit better), the bookshelf, my filing drawer, the DVD books, and who knows what else I'll find.
