Attention Blog Post Commenters: This Post Is For You!

Love, love, love when I receive comments. They make my day. Honest.

Many comments that are left are questions or statements that deserve some followup. But, if your email address isn't linked to your Google Profile or you don't leave your email address in the post, I can't respond!

Unless it's a giveaway post and I'm receiving comments for entries, I really try to respond to every single comment that I'm left. Even if it's just one that says that you love my blog. Hello! I love your positive feedback. I want to email you back and THANK YOU!

A few months ago Shelley, from The House of Smiths, wrote a blog post on this topic. Now I know why.

I'm going to show you how to change this setting.

This is what I get when I try to reply to a comment without a linked email address: noreply-comment@blogger.com. Boo!

If you comment with your Google account, then it will make you "sign up for Blogger" before leaving your first comment. This doesn't mean you have to create a blog or anything, it just means you have to create a profile with Blogger so you can comment with your Google account. You can change all of the profile details to make it as anonymous as you'd like once you create the profile.

Once you sign up for Blogger, you'll need to go to www.blogger.com to edit your profile.

Then you'll need to click "show my email address" and "save profile". You can change the email address that is associated with this feature on this page as well - under "identity" and "email address". You can always use your "junk mail" account or set up an email with Gmail for this.

Your email address will not literally show up in your Blogger profile. It will show like this:

When you leave a comment for me, I receive an email with your comment, and your email address will automatically be the "reply to" email (if you go through these steps and enable this feature). Pretty simple.

All in all, I'd really like to be able to respond to each one of you. You can always leave your email address in the comment for me like this: tiffany (at) thenesteffect.com. That way it can't be picked up by spam bots because it's not technically a real email typed like that.

Thank you! =]

* You may repost this, as long as you link back to my blog. Thanks! *

  2. It would totally make this tutorial pointless for this blog, but you should check out disqus for commenting. Made it so much easier for me.

  4. Do you know how many times I've tried to post through Google/Blogger and it hasn't let me? That is why I went the "name/URL" route. Because then I could at least RESPOND. :)

  5. I usually use "name/URL" when commenting but I'm trying out "Google Account." I really like "name/URL" because I like clicking on interesting comments and seeing the person's blog if they have one.

  6. One more thing about comments. When the spam catching captcha's are enabled, I can't tell you how many times I've clicked off the page too quickly and not even gotten to leave the comment I typed, because I didn't know or forgot the captcha was going to pop up. I don't know of a great solution on blogger, though.

  9. Hi Laura -

I was going to reply to your comments via email - but your email isn't linked. =]

When using a Google account to comment, you can link your blog (even if it's not a Blogger hosted one) to your account. If someone comments with their Google account, it makes it easier for me to see their blogs, what other blogs they follow (which may be of interest to me), and their email (if they choose to link it). Using a Google account has many benefits.

Does my blog use a captcha code? I can't find the setting in my Blogger dashboard to see if it's turned on or not. And because I'm the blog owner, when I leave comments, it wouldn't pop up for me anyways.

  10. Hi Jennifer -

Google has known issues with people not being able to comment through embedded comment forms, like this one. I guess the issue doesn't occur when it's a pop-up window or full page comment window.

I tested it out, but I think too many people would be confused on where to comment - all it does with both of those options is leave a tiny link that you'd have to click to post a comment.

From what I read, the issue generally only occurs with Internet Explorer or when your browser's cookie security is set really high.

I've never had the issue, so I'm not 100% sure why it happens.
