Have 5 Minutes? Create a 2011 Tax Document File

Tax season has creeped up on us again. Tax documents are now arriving in the mail and inboxes, and I need a place to keep them in order. This year we're going to attempt filing together as a newly married couple. We'll see if we really save any money.

I added my taxes file to my mail station. In the hanging folder I added 3 file folders, labeled: Tiffany, Chris, Deductions.

Yeah, I know - that was a lot of pictures, but my desk looks a bit differently now than it did last time I showed. =]

So go ahead and find a convenient place to store your tax information as it comes in. Organize it in a way that makes sense. File your taxes when you receive everything!

Good luck!

How do you organize your taxes before filing (so you don't lose anything)?

  1. I created a similar station...in my cupboard! It lays flat. :) But I would like more counter space so that it can be out like yours.

My husband immediately takes the tax documents and puts them in our tax envelope. (Our taxes are nearly complete thanks to him...)

  3. I dont have room for a mail station so I just have a large Manila envelope that all the tax info goes into. It's just my hubby & I and are taxes are fairly simple so it works well!

  4. I need an entire file drawer for my tax information because of mine and my husbands businesses. To make tax time less stressful (in other words to avoid having to spend days going through receipts to add everthing up), each receipt is logged into an excel program under it's appropriate tab (eg: fuel, office exp, equipment repair...) then is placed in the appropriate file. At tax time, all I have to do is total the collums for each type of expense and print the spread sheets for my tax preparer. I am also starting something new this year. I am scanning the receipts to save in a file on my computer so if I need a copy of a receipt or copy of my tax return in another year, I do not have to pull my files out of storage. All I will need to do is print off a copy from the computer.

  5. Love the way you station looks really pretty and organized. I also created a folder to start storing all of the taxes documentation that is starting to arrive. This way we do not loose any of it.

  11. Hi Courtney,

I bought the filing box from Target. I just saw them there yesterday, so I know they still sell them.

  13. To be honest my tax information was usually in a pile on my desk, and the pile would get moved around with various other papers until, who knows when. This year I started my Home Binder, and I have an extra sleeve in the back that I have put the tax documents in.
