Values Americans Live By

Today's post is going to be...well, different. I've been wanting to share this with you for a long time now, but have just kept putting it off for numerous reasons.

Back when I was a senior in high school (in 2005), I took a culture shock class about society and manners. The class was absolutely amazing and I have so many positive memories about the class. My teacher, Brenda Sinkovich, was incredible and really wanted us all to learn about ourselves and our values. It was never a pushy class, but more of an encouraging class - she wanted us to understand everything we could about ourselves and become comfortable in our own skin. It worked for me.

At the end of the semester we were given an article to read titled "Values Americans Live By", written by L. Robert Kohls. (You can read it here.) It was eye opening and thought provoking. After discussion about the article, we were asked to make a project featuring our 10 personal values. I have never enjoyed creating something so much in my life and ever since, have wanted to create another. I visited my high school when I went back to PA for my wedding in June and got to see my culture shock teacher. We reminisced about the course and she showed me that she still had the book she created 6 years ago as well. It was such a nice reunion.

I want to share my book with you, so the following pictures are all pages from my book. {Don't judge me too much -- remember, I made this 6 years ago, when I was 17 and still in high school. lol}

  1. That was a really really interesting article. I took a culture class in college and found it highly entertaining. I loved learning the nuances of other cultures and how we do some things that others find weird/offensive/wrong etc.

    I've never made a values book but I've made something similar. I made a Vision board (that actually turned into a scrapbook style one).

    "A vision board is simply a visual representation or collage of the things that you want to have, be, or do in your life. It consists of a poster or foam board with cut-out pictures, drawings and/or writing on it of the things that you want in your life or the things that you want to become."

    I divided mine into 8 sections that included family, creativity, myself, health, finances etc. For each 8 x 8 page I pasted pictures or sayings of things I wanted to have or achieve.

  2. I never really put a name to them but I used to make pages like this all the time in high school and decorate my room and notebooks with them.
    I think it's a great idea to take the time to evaluate what's important to you, whether it is with a similar project or just a simple list.
    Love it!
