Have 10 Minutes? Organize a Kitchen Cupboard

On Saturday morning I decided to clean out two of my kitchen cupboards. They were a mess - full of food that was overdue to be disposed of and needing some organizational direction. My process took more than 10 minutes because I took inventory of everything with my new Out of Milk app on my phone. It was so nice to be able to scan the bar code of everything, rather than typing it all in. Now I'll have my list on the go when I need it at the store. Chris and I are working really hard at getting organized with meal planning to save some money. More on that in a different post to come.

Here are my before and after pictures from the two cupboards I cleaned out.

I threw out two grocery bags full of expired food. It makes me sad that it's wasted, because some of it was unopened. We'll get better at this, I promise. =]

So take 10 minutes today to organize a kitchen cupboard that's driving you nuts. Clear everything out. Organize things in a way that makes sense. All of my unopened "extras" went up top (I'm 5'2", so anything on the top shelf is hard for me to reach), along with the occasionally used baking supplies. Everything on the bottom shelf are all things that I use often and need to access easily. The quick meals basket includes packets/seasonings for meals such as tacos, Shake & Bake, Pasta Sides, fajitas, beef stew, etc.

If you have more time and/or feeling adventurous, clean and organize all of your cupboards or pantry, too. Good luck!

I'd love to hear what you've accomplished with this quick task. If you have any tips, please be sure to share! And if you have a blog and have posted pictures of your kitchen/pantry organization, I'd love for you to share the link. Everyone loves a little inspiration.

  1. I am a little OCD when it comes to organizing, I wish I could take ten minutes to organize something and than leave. If I start I usually want to finish if I do not it drives me crazy. But that is my next project to organize my kitchen.

  3. Just wanted to say your cupboards look fab! I wasn't able to leave a comment on the Erin Condren giveaway and soooooo badly would like a planner!!!! So I thought I would leave one here: I bought a little desk for my room with wheels that I can pull up to my bed from Target. I have a file folder holder underneath with labeled tabs of our monthly bills and cute file folders that make me enjoy filing. We can pay them and and file them away real very easily. I hope this is a great organizational system for us -not out of site out of mind anymore! Thanks for inspiring us! Love your blog!

  4. I need to organize my cabinets as well, not just the pantry ones either. I love your blog, gives me great ideas on how to organize my home into something actually manageable.

  5. I have to admit I've been stalking your blog for a while now, and I love it!!! I definitely appreciate the plethora of ideas, and the extra push to getting and keeping my life organized it provides. How did you make the labels for your baskets? I have the same ones (well, if you got them from Dollar Tree) and the regular label maker labels are too small to really see well on them. Thanks!!

  6. Hi BrittanyM,

I used my Cricut Expressions machine to cut vinyl for my labels.

  7. Just wondering if you are aware that the expiration date on non-perishable foods is a sell-by date. Non-perishable Foods (esp. those you haven't opened) are still good well beyond the stamped date. Here's a reference guide: http://www.austinfoodbank.org/partner/downloads/pantry-operations/guidelinesforperishableandnon.pdf

  9. Hi Becca,

I just looked into it - apparently Out of Milk isn't available for Apple.

  10. Before you throw out expired food again, take it to a food bank and donate it. Some canned goods are still safe to eat a year after the expiration date. I only know this because I volunteer at a place that distributes to food banks.
