Have 5 Minutes? Clear Off Your Desk - Or Any Other Pile

Confession: I've become a lazy piler. Both my desk at home and at school are cluttered with piles currently. I don't like these piles, but they keep sneaking up on me and growing bigger each time. What's a girl to do?

Today I'm going to take 10 minutes total - 5 minutes on each surface - to clear off my desks. I don't have pictures of my school desk to show you, but I can show you my home desk.

Here's the before picture.

Here's the after picture.

I actually did file and purge everything in the pile. I didn't just clear it off for the sake of the picture. I promise. =] I feel much better about my space now.

Today I challenge you to do the same. Choose a space - your desk, kitchen counter, coffee table, etc. - and conquer the pile that's slowly growing. Don't just move it - file it or purge it. You'll feel better afterwards.

  1. My "pile cleaning" consisted of me politely reminding my husband, that papers to be filed do not get set on my desk, but get put into the top shelf of the divider... he had 4 things he brought home from work that I needed to file sitting on my desk when I got up this morning.... other than that, I have no piles, yay! I hate piles, so I have trained myself and mostly my husband (he is still new to the process since we are only in our 2nd year of marriage) to not have any... papers go where they belong, dishes go in the dishwasher, and mail is sorted right away and put where it belongs. Once a week when I do my set up for the next week, I file the papers away.

  3. my piles mean I'm lazy? Say it isn't so. I've been trying to rationalize these piles away...I guess that's just not happening! Thanks for inspiring me to get to business while I procrastinate by reading blogs instead of doing work for school. I needed that kick in the pants! Sometimes the problems seem more troubling than they actually are. 5 minutes really did the trick for me!
