Have 5 Minutes? Clear Out Old Pencils & Pens

Do pens and pencils seem to creep into your house and make themselves at home? I can recall as a child having a wooden bucket full of pens, pencils, and markers in our kitchen. I can also recall my mom frequently going through this bucket, testing pens and markers and throwing away those that were past their prime, along with the broken pencils.

But if you're the type of person to collect every pen you come across at businesses (that are giving them away, of course) or hotels, and purchases them when they're on sale, you're bound to have quite the stash. I used to do this...until I had a box full of pens waiting to be used, then I said "no more". (Although, my husband still seems to sneak these pens in.)

Take 5 minutes today to go through your pencil/pen cups/drawers/stash and discard what no longer works or is damaged. Have way too many? Donate them to a local school or another place that you know could use them (perhaps a senior citizen community - you know they love their word puzzles). I am taking about 2 dozen pens to school to donate to the teachers lounge. I have about 100 in my classroom right now - so I definitely don't need them.

Good luck!

  3. I know they are many but not where I need them! Thanks for the challenge. I will do a pencil and pen treasure hunt. And then place them close to where I need them. Have a fun weekend!

  4. My mom used to come home with BAGS of pens and markers from financial aid conferences. I don't think we've EVER bought pens, pencils, or highlighters. Every year, we pack up a gallon-size ziplock bag and donate them to an organization that puts together school supplies for under-privileged families. And we STILL have drawers full of our own. I'm on a mission right now to just keep using one pen at a time until I wear it out. My goal is 15 for 2012.

  5. I had the SAME issue with pens! What I did: during college, my mom and I would try and set days to hang out and catch up. One time, we went to a paint-your-own-pottery studios and I made a fun-colored vase. Well, I stumbled upon it a couple years later and it now holds all of my pens! I know exactly where it is and its purpose, so it makes it "fun" and easy to put my million pens in the same place.

  6. I LOVE pens... and thus definitely need to do this! I collect so many pens and pencils and need to just throw away old ones that do not work! Great reminder!
